Hello,
Hope you're having a good week. We had a very quiet Easter weekend.
Slow Stitching
I've seen the term *slow stitching* used a lot lately and wasn’t sure why people weren’t just calling it embroidery. So I did what I normally do and asked ChatGPT.
The answer gave me such a realisation about process and why I want to create things—whether it’s painting, drawing, or knitting.
ChatGPT on slow stitching:
"Slow stitching" is a mindful, meditative approach to hand sewing. It focuses more on the process than the final product, embracing imperfection, creativity, and the joy of stitching by hand.
Here’s what it typically involves:
- Hand-sewing with visible stitches—no machines.
- Reusing old fabrics like scraps, worn clothes, or vintage linens.
- Improvisational designs—no patterns needed.
- Layering textures—you might use embroidery, patchwork, appliqué, or quilting.
- Mindfulness—many people find it calming and therapeutic, almost like a form of meditation.
It was like a light bulb going off in my mind. So of course, I wanted to have a go.
Crafting with Others
I’ve mentioned before that I’m a full-time carer to Oliver, and he often doesn’t like me leaving the house. This has made my life very controlled over the past five years.
Recently, he’s started allowing me to go with him to my parents' house. It’s been great for me to see more of my Mam and her friend, so we can have crafting days together.
On Monday, we decided to have a slow stitching day. Cue my Mam getting lots of her supplies out and me gathering some bits to give it a try.
Massive table of stuff!
My Mam has been a crafter forever—and so was my Gran. Over the years, she's gathered *a lot* of supplies. This was just a small selection…
We had a slow start, and that’s okay—it’s all about enjoyment and the process.
Abstract April
Thinking about process again, I’ve really enjoyed this month’s abstract landscapes. I think it’s because I’ve allowed my work to be more free and less controlled. I’m finding joy in the process.
I've managed to find the time—and the *want*—to create a piece of art every day.
Easter Holidays
It’s still the school holidays—it’s felt like a long two weeks! But I’ve really appreciated the break from meetings with school and other professionals.
I've been listening to Patti Smith’s *Just Kids*. I really like her memoirs—this one is about her early years and meeting her husband.
Last night, I watched *A Real Pain* (2024), a film I didn’t know much about. It’s a very simple, emotional, and sweet story about family.
Still enjoying knitting on the Copenhagen Cardigan—and I haven’t cast on anything new (yet!).
Walking More - I managed to get out for lots of walks this week, which has been great. I'm trying to increase my step count—a challenge when all my hobbies involve sitting!
Take care and enjoy the process,
Louise
I love patching up my old jeans with slow stitched patches, coming up with different embroidery stitches. My latest addition is a little flower made in Zakka Style fashion. Just love to know it‘s there with me every day.
